The BEA provides services to companies and research institutions and technological development centers, in order to facilitate the implementation of initiatives and projects related essentially to industry and research around microalgae and cyanobacteria.

DNA strain identification FORM IDRF1
The genetic identification of strains of microalgae, macroalgae and cyanobacteria is made in collaboration with the BIOMOL Laboratory of the ULPGC, through the analysis of DNA sequences: extraction, amplification, SANGER sequencing and barcoding analysis.

To request this service and for consultations you can contact with the BIOMOL Laboratory of the ULPGC through the following e-mails: biomol@ulpgc.es y nieves.gonzalez@ulpgc.es
BEA genomic DNA FORM IDRF1

The DNA extracted and purified from the strains of the BEA Collection is evaluated by spectrophotometry, ensuring minimum ratios of DNA quality and quantity.

Please, complete and submit BEA genomic DNA Inquiry Form to servicios@marinebiotechnology.org

Isolation and purification of strains of microalgae and cyanobacteria FORM IRF1
The BEA offers the possibility of obtaining strains of cyanobacteria and clonal/axenic microalgae isolated from natural samples or non-axenic material provided by customers. To request this service download and fill out the following form (Isolation request form, IRF1) and send it to servicios@marinebiotechnology.org.

You may check the cost of all our services here: Prices of the Spanish Bank of Algae.
Flow cytometry FORM FCRF1
The BEA's flow cytometry unit offers the possibility of obtaining strains of clonal and/or axenic microalgae and cyanobacteria, isolated from nature or from non-axenic unialgal material supplied by the client. For this purpose, it has a Sony SH800 flow cytometer equipped with 3 lasers (blue, green and red) and Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) system. The flow cytometry unit can also provide the following services:
  • Cell viability
  • Cellular cycle
  • Ploidy
  • Lipid content
  • Oxidative stress

To request this service download and fill out the following form (Cytometry request form) and send it to servicios@marinebiotechnology.org.

Strain cultivation FORM CRF1
The BEA supplies cultures of some of the microalgae and cyanobacterial strains included in its public catalog, in different quantities.

To request this service, download and fill out the following form (Culture request form, CRF1) and send it to servicios@marinebiotechnology.org

Fluorimetric techniques FORM SRF1
The BEA carries out the identification and quantification of nutrients (NO3, NH4, PO4), Chlorophylls, CDOM and PC using the fluorescence spectrophotometry technique or fluorometry.

To request this service download and fill out the Service form (SRF/1) and send it to servicios@marinebiotechnology.org

Strain deposits for maintenance FORM DS1
The BEA offers several services for strain deposit: Public or open deposit, restricted or private deposit and patent deposit .

Public or open deposit.

Microalgae under this type of deposit will be showed in the BEA´s public catalog and can be supplied to the public. To request this service and a budget, download and fill out the following form (Depositing Strains, DS1) and send it to servicios@marinebiotechnology.org.

Restricted or private deposit.

Microalgae under this type of deposit do not appear in the BEA's public catalog. The BEA guarantees the depositor that microalgae will not be shipped to third parties while remaining within this category, which requires a special rate. To request this service and a budget download and fill out the following form (Depositing Strains, DS1) and send it to servicios@marinebiotechnology.org.

Strain deposits for Patent BP1 BEA
The BEA, as an International Depositary Authority, conserves strains of microalgae and cyanobacteria for patents. To deposit a strain of microalgae, please read the BEA Statutes as International Deposit Authority and the BP/1 Deposit Request Form, where you will find all the information on the strain that needs to be submitted.
Microalgae strains should be able to be kept in the collection by subculturing in liquid and/or solid medium (agarized).
Microalgae strains must be identified at the species level by a taxonomic authority, and be free from any contamination by fungi, protozoa or other microalgae or cyanobacteria. The depositor must provide information on:

  • Your taxonomic identification (taxonomic identifier, proposed taxonomic description, ...).
  • Collection data (location, date, collector, ...).
  • Characteristics of the habitat (temperature, pH, conductivity, ...).
  • Toxicity or health/environmental risks.
  • Cultivation and maintenance conditions (temperature, irradiation, culture medium,...).
  • All this information must be included in the request form for the deposit of microalgae strains.
  • Microalgae strains should be sent for deposit as liquid or agarized cultures.
  • The minimum number of replicas to be supplied for deposit is 5. Microalgae and cyanobacterial cultures should contain a minimum of 102 to 104 cells per milliliter.
  • Microalgae strains will be assigned a temporary reference number until they pass the feasibility analyzes, which are performed by several subcultures of the strainsin the suggested culture medium. The average time required to perform the feasibility analysis will vary between 7 to 35 days, depending on the strains.

You will be notified on the result of the viability test (positive or negative) for your strain's deposit in the BEA.

To request this service download and fill out the following form (Deposit request form BP1) and send it to servicios@marinebiotechnology.org.
